Time to review the MacBook Pro Mid 2012 (Unibody) and see how much this thing goes for… I’m doing this on an empty stomach, Chipotle doesn’t open til 10:30 and its 10AM. :O
As per usual we steal learn all we need from everymac.com!
These Macs can be configured by CPU, RAM, HDD/SSD, and has 3 display options. All units have the same GPU, and this is the last MacBook Pro that was the unibody, it was sold side by side to the Retina MBP.
This unit, among others was notorious for GPU issues… some sellers have gotten their mac fixed by Apple and comes with a new GPU. This is a free service, but I think the swiss time is running out!
Me personally I would try to buy one of these locally for $400 so I could flip. If I was looking for someone, I’d try to get one in great condition at $600 and upgrade from there… good thing these are i7 and dGPU only. Additionally this is the last mac w/ a DVD drive, however consider the 13″ model if you really need to burn DVDs or CDs due to availability (they were discontinued in 2016 I think vs 2013 for the 15″)
These had GPU issues, if you are buying blind (missing charger/dead battery) best of fucking luck. Search via Serial Number but kinda hard to say if the seller is sketchy and swapped bottoms…

- 2.6GHz i7-3720QM w/ 6MB Cache
- 2.7GHz i7-3820QM w/ 8MB Cache
- Last MacBook with removable RAM! 🙁
- PC3-12800 DDR3L RAM, 4GB on base model, 8GB on others
- 16GB is the max supported
- MacBooks use 2.4″ 9.5mm Drives, 7mm can be used with ease
- Add a second hard drive by swapping out the DVD drive w/ a caddy!
- 500GB 5400RPM (base model)
- 750GB 5400RPM or 7200RPM (most models)
- 1TB ????RPM
- 128GB SSD
- 256GB SSD
- 512GB SSD
- I believe you can use any HDD/SSD, no whitelist. Install OS via USB or internet recovery
- 1440 x 900 WXGA+ Glossy
- 1680 x 1050 WSXGA Glossy
- 1680 x 1060 WSXGA Matte – Only unit w/ a silver bezel
- I’d recommend the latter, but having a Pixel, glossy isn’t so bad
- None of these are IPS, rMBPs brought IPS to macbook
- nVidia GeForce GT 650m w/ 1GB RAM
- Intel HD 4000 while on battery
- 384 Cuda cores for Adobe Programs – Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere
- Final Cut Pro X won’t benefit much because its not ATI (Open CL)
MBP Mid 2012 15″ – $450 – 700 // 1000 or 1200 ~ 307 v 219 or 355
A lot of units in the 500 to 700 range, a lot of well spec’d units at 800 to 900. Break past 1K and expect to get pirated “legit” software. However some models (wait what was I saying, i forgot)
eBay is weird, showing different lots of results. I had to add the -retina modifier in the search, because it was 1,000 listings being shown. However when I search specifically for retina, only 240 listings were shown. I also got a result of 680 or so on some searches, not sure why. 219 was my first result, however when pressing next, it went up to 355. Originally I thought this price would of topped out at 900, but the next page brought more results.
25 Risky – $330 – 580 (only ones that turned on at least)
135 HDD – $450 – 690 // 850
68 SSD – $570 – 790 // 980
18 Refurb – $470 – 660 // 850
2 New-ish – $800 – 920 // 1200??? (not enough sales)
1 New – $2200
Some of these at a lower price are BIN listings, which I recommend. Additionally the ‘seller refurbished’ seemed actually cheaper, but thats because they were auctions. There are a few badass sellers here, but not too many.
113 2.3 i7 – $480 – 670 // 850
52 2.6 i7 – $570 – 700 // 900
4 2.7 i7 – $675 – 950 // 1550 (900 is a guess, two listings $1550+)
60 16GB – $585 – 760 // 990 (some went past 1K but had ‘bundles’)
24 1TB – $560 – 790 // 1050
Had to spice up the searches, I tried specifically searching for matte but I only found 4 listings. Not many listings advertising the 2.7 options. Also surprisingly there are a few listings to where 16GB RAM or 1TB HDD are at a low base price IMO.
70 Keys – $10 – 27 // 55 or 90 (if you want the bezel aka ‘topcase’)
54 Lobo – $280 – 400 // 520+
12 LCD – $115 – 180 // 250 (most are entire lid swaps :D)
10 Battery – $30 – 60 (buy with warranties)
330 Charger – $18 – 40 // 70
20 Bottom – $24 – 50
If you are buying one of these cheap and need to replace the motherboard… I don’t recommend it unless you get it sub $150 price originally. Because for you to repair and maybe sell is going to be hard if it doesn’t work right :(.
Added bottom covers, because people fuck these up all the time. You could probably fix a ugly unit for under $200 if you play your cards right.
You know what… I think i should do the retina model now that I think of it. The price of IPS must be good…
