T460p & T470p buyer’s remorse blarg

I compare this a lot to my W550s here and well, thats because the T460p was supposed to be the upgrade from it. But I ended up not liking it that much, despite it’s slightly better performance. I splurged on a Dell Precision 7730 at the beginning of 2022 & well, I require more power. I’m wishing I could get a P15 Gen 2 or HP Z Book… uh Fury I think? Now that I think of it, I could just get an eGPU set up as a stop gap.

Insert my shill video here. This page is… actually I don’t know, at first it was a rant, then it became a comparison to each other, but I had to add in the P5x, so then added the P7x, but like what if you want the P43s? At that point might as well bring the normal and ‘s’ models of these machines too.

So I should just shove this, or like, not have a post at all, but then since I’m writing all this crap down, IF someone sees the video, & wants all this info in one place, boom πŸ˜€

If you’re gonna buy a T460p or T470p, just spring for the latter & def get the best i7… consider the P50 or P51, they are both quadcore, have the same i7 or better processors, and have a pretty fucking nice keyboard plus you can get a 4K screen on them. insanely, I did not care much of the 1440p, this is the 2nd time I’ve come across one in the 14″ format, the first was the X1 Carbon Gen 3. AKSHULLY, having used the 2015 MacBook 12, I like that screen, colors are amazing. But I don’t like the panels that Lenovo used, FHD seems to be at a nice spot, esp the AUO B140HAN01.3, shilling it since 2014 πŸ™‚

You could COULD probably get a T470p cheaper than a T460p, but im pretty sure it’s gonna be a base i5 version & well that’s really not the one I’d recommend, although it is better. The P5x and P7x pricier at the start and then jump at mid price. Even the P43s, that is ULV quadcore, has a way high price vs the performance machines, probably because its newer and “an ultrabook workstation” it is how it is.

I guess my whole point is moot, the 14″ quadcore is in a strange place indeed. It is at a good price, but for $500 as my budget… i’d try to get something bigger/stronger.

Not listing the dualcores CPUs on the other laptops, they can do 4 threads, big whoop. Having owned a W550s, ULV dualcore fucking sucks vs quad or six core… its OK for basic lightroom, HDR w/ 5 shots or more on a 24MP camera? insanely slow merging times (like it took 3+ minutes), editing the blends took a massive toll on it, I did maybe 8 sets/exports & stopped bothering since then.

Graphics

The iGPU peformance of the T460p and T470p are like extremely similar. If you go Xeon then it’ll be called HD P530 or P630 respectively. The performance is negligible as the desktop iGPUs are ranked within 3 places between each other. But I think its moot because who knows if the benchmarks I am looking at are iGPU performance on a laptop CPU. Is it better on a quadcore? I assume, what about dualcore? probably worse. But the benchmarks probably also have performances of the desktop iGPUs as well… so surely those are going to be much better thanks to cooling & power loads. With that said, i won’t bother listing benchmarks scores. Get the card equal to the system requirements. League of Legends plays about the same on my W550s and T430s, and it was a bit better on the T460p w/ i7-6700HQ, which was comparable to my 4 core 2012 Mac Pro.

Graphical performance really depends. The video rendering speeds on my W550s vs the T460p was phenomenal. I actually did not like to render videos on my W550s

I still have buyer’s remorse on the T460p that I bought. Overpaid for that damn machine long ago. It was an upgrade to the W550s and well… I still like that machine, thought the T460p smacks the shit out of it for video editing, the screen was meh. To be honest, the T460p’s screen died on my laptop! For some reason it didn’t have a display, and while trying to fuck around and swap with it, the damn thing still didn’t work for a bit. I had to give up my T430s’ B140HAN01.3 screen for it, still one of the best there is out there.

T460p’s screen on the T430s after it stopped working

I nabbed a HP Zbook 15 G4, nearly same spec but in 15″ with better audio, i7-6820hq & Quadro M1000M gpu, oh yeah actual NVMe 3×4 speeds. As my luck with anything made by HP, brightness didn’t work after clean windows 10 install and I had to go thru some baloney to get it going, it just didnt work like apple, dell or lenovo stuff does, not surprised. So I got the machine working after awhile, it needed a clean install to work, as I strangely could not replicate the steps I did w/ the clean install, on the reformatted/resetted drive that the seller gave me. Maybe it was bc that was SATA & I had NVMe on the working drive, but the same drivers/programs/update process did not fucking work.

I wanted to sell the T460p, as gaming was way better and yeah, although it wasn’t as loud as the Zbook Studio G4 I had w/ the Xeon CPU and best GPU… I sort of lost the luster of it. In a strange way, I’ve had too many computers, to which I wasn’t happy with the machine I had. I lost the allure of building and renovating machines, so this machine was not good enough. I needed to spend more $$$, a lot more. Like the W700ds that I overpaid, this 15″ machine wasn’t that badass behemouth. I had a HP EliteBook 8770w in the past, and loved that big ass machine. It was a time when I did daily it a bit with my W700ds, but, my only purpose was to resell it. $300 from Arrow direct, resold for $700 b4 ebay/paypal fees minus another $60 in upgrades.

But the 8770W was old, and yes I could of upgraded the graphics card, but the 3rd gen i7 just… old for me. I’ve had a few M6400’s in the past, and the M4600 not that bad, a few borked M4500 and M4600 parts machines, but I wanted the big boy. After some price research, I saw a 7730 for a “deal”. Thinking I could flip this too, I listed it on eBay, but I didn’t want to lose any money on this, so i put it for a hefty…. $1400 or so? after calculating the $900 i spent plus other parts I paid, I would of only made $100 profit. However I just liked buying and flipping, and well I bought a P50 in as is condition and a pair of untested T470p systems. Oh yeah I just had a tax return, so I had money to throw, I was putting away about $50 each paycheck for about 5 months. All 3 systems worked, well the P50 has a bios lock, and the two T470p had strangeness when installing Windows 10.

My original T460p sold at a loss, but it was sold. I overpaid for it, and its already been a year since I’ve used it, and I bought it at the height of covid overpriced-ness. Totally fine with it, money in and money out is all that matters. I swapped screens on the T470p’s, bc the i5 came with the 1440p screen, NO dGPU, and the i7 had only 1080p. Bought the NVMe adapter and the machine booted pretty fast, but.. compared to the Zbook, still not as fast. I put it at a premium but no one wanted to fucking buy it, I should of just got a 1TB SSD and it probably would of sold instead of the… 500 or 256GB it had, i dont remember. Eventually it sold, and the p50 still had the bios lock. I did not want to deal w/ selling it with a lock because no matter what you put in the descrption or title, the buyer eventually will “find it” and not like it, EVEN WITH ALL THE WARNINGS. because guess what, people drop box your shit online, and the $500 laptop, they fucking sell for $800 and then DEMAND IMMEDIATELY a fucking refund when their fucking idiot, peice of shit buyer, doesn’t FUCKING know how to enable brightness on their computer, because LOOKING AT THEIR $1600 SMARTPHONE ASKING IT HOW TO DO IT, is too fucking hard.

alright idk where I was going with that, listening to EmpLemon’s video “The History of the Downward Spiral” got me in a sad mood ;(. Fuck Jimmy Kimmel swarmy narc’s ass.

Just let the good times roll πŸ™‚

Anywho, the T470p didn’t sell as high as I wanted, so i hate these laptops now… but for a budget, they are OK for quadcore workstation w/ meh dGPU. However at this point, you might need to throw 1K on an eGPU setup plus whatever costs a laptop with lightning connector can have. See the W550s had some whack way to do so, and the T460p couldn’t do it. For some dumb reason, Lenovo never offered any of these laptops with USB-C. The P50 can have it, but Lenovo didn’t put USB-C on the T470p, so like whyyy. Then they make the P53s and they fucking go the Apple MBP route & fucking have a ULV processor, not a true full power quadcore… can we just have a fat fucking 14″ laptop that can blow the shit out of other 18″ machines??? seriously they make these computers bigger but thinner and it fucks all of cooling.
