MSI Gaming Laptops – Intel 4th gen to 11th

This is not an extensive guide, just a ballpark for some machines. A lot of models are omitted, like the lower end ones, just about all 14″, most 16″ ones, and ofc the normie laptops. GAMING ONLY, NO n00bs!
Forgot to post this months back….

Hello, I bought a 2019 MSI laptop!
Specifically a WS65 15.6″ Workstation. i7-9750H, RTX 4000 Max-Q, FHD IPS 60Hz, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe.
The Dell precision 7730 is bugging the shit out of me:

  • CMOS battery is shit, replaced 2 times
  • Battery drains somehow, so settings reset
  • Sometimes it hang at boot to a black screen
  • Fucking doesn’t detect drivers, so it wont accept a mouse…
  • Power button not working, due to mobo connector damaged
  • God the fucking brightness controls w/ FN + arrow keys…
  • Trackpoint scroll sucks ass
  • 17.3″ FHD IPS screen is just ugly, bad contrast & colors

I’ve been wanting an upgrade, so I have a specific eBay saved search “laptop (xeon, i9, 4060, 4070, 4080, a5000, a4000, rtx 4000, rtx 5000)”. That eventually got me looking at this MSI with an RTX 4000 and I bidded $400 to win. Now gotten it, damn thing is pretty nice and snazzy. But the brightness is the same location as the 7730, but the only FN key is at a different spot! The speakers are… eh, and spacebar needs to be fixed. But did I get a good deal? I’d say it was fair, but I had to do some research on it, which includes a price guide and a lil into for MSI laptops. So far I’ve been impressed with it not running like a POS and will be looking for a beefier machine. Overall, it is a nice upgrade from my W550s minus it not having a number pad.

MicroStar International, anything special about them? I don’t really know, I just know them as a gaming computer company. Well they are not Asus which I’ve had a few mobos, peripherals and laptops in the past. I’d say MSI is probably top 3 gaming laptop brands along with Asus, Alienware, Razer and Gigabyte. Yeah there’s Clevo, Omen, Eurocom, Sager, but that’s a research day for later.

Model names & info

I only researched from 2014 to about 2021… also swiped info from a few websites.

2023 Line Up
2019 Gaming line up

Casual, Entry, & Business 2023
“Creator” Series 2023 Workstations

As for screen size, they are similar to ThinkPad and Dell Precision naming.
GT73 = 17″
Titan 17HX = 17″
GT62 = 15.6″….
GS50 = 14″….

In Taiwan & China, they see number four as bad luck, kind of how USA sees the 13th floor in Hotels bad luck as well (plenty of movies have this). So the xx5# machines will be 14″, and most xx6# were 15.6″ laptops.

Stealth 16 AI Studio = 16″
Creator M14 = 14″
GE66 Raider = 15.6″
GE68 Raider = 16.0″ 16:10

On the current generation machines just have the screen number in the name now. Upon look at MSI’s site, they have two Raiders available, and when i selected the 16″ option, it showed me the GE68 Raider. Upon looking at newegg for the GE67, this was a 15.6″ model.

Not all the same models have the same CPU/GPU gens

One thing to note is that MSI will update a particular laptop model with a newer GPU or CPU… heck maybe even screen. Say for instance the GT70 Titan, it came out in 2014 with a Intel 4th Gen CPU. I’ve seen some configured with a 6th gen or 7th gen CPU. Or even it’ll have a 4th gen CPU but have a GPU that came out 2 years later. This can be a good thing if you are looking for parts to swap from, because some gens have similar exteriors. There was a laptop sold that had a mobo swapped from a different model, but the chassis was the same.

Model Number on bottom =/= Laptop model on website

On the bottom of these laptops they’ll have a model number for instance on the 15.6″ WS65 workstation I own, it says “Model: MS16-Q4”. Upon searching that on ebay, I will get GS65 Stealth laptops & parts for them. This brings another layer to search for, as it also has links to other machines, like the GT60 Dominator but I think that may be by error, as I’ve seen ThinkPad laptops had this in the past. Most likely due to the seller just clicking “sell one like this” and it has info pre-filled.

Extreme Class

  • GT Titan
  • GT Dominator (old)
    • Available in 15″, 17″ & 18″
    • Flashy colors, desktop replacement, max cooling & overclocking
    • Rear chassis protrudes extensively behind the LCD hinges w/ design
    • Desktop GPUs and desktop CPU options
    • Best screen refresh rates
      • CreatorProX – “Creatives” Variant
      • WT – Workstation Variant

Enthusiast Class

  • GS Stealth
  • GS Phantom (old)
    • Slim series, top CPU & GPU but “Thin”
    • Available in 14″ through 18″, various forms, hard gaming to ultrabook
    • Rear chassis looks “normal”, hardly protrudes, might be slanted
    • Top build materials in a small chassis, understated, some RGBs
    • Some versions don’t have rear fan exhausts
    • Great screen refresh rates, 16:10 models available
      • WS – Workstation variant, at least in 15″ versions
      • Creator 16? – Slim, slightly different chassis

  • GE Raider
    • Available in 16″, 17″ & 18″.
    • 15″ model discontinued for now
    • Some less heavy hardware & performance
    • Cheaper price, still badass, but not overkill
    • Great screen refresh rates, similar to Titan but won’t best them
    • Some models have it’s rear chassis protruding
      • CreatorProZ Variant? I stopped caring…
      • WF or WP? – Unsure of workstation variant

  • Vector GP (can be in mid tier category)
    • Cheaper version of the GE Raider w/ compromises
    • GP Leopard successor, so lower end
    • Not as flashy as Raider
    • Performance can equal in some cases
    • Supposedly has less cooling, power requirements, smaller battery, throttling, etc.

Some models say “Studio” or “AI” in their names. Don’t really want to see what that all means. AI seems to be just special software integration from MSI, mayyyybe has a different chip inside or is just an Intel CPU w/ that is slightly different than “regular” ones.

I am not 100% sure what the Creator series are… but they seem to basically be Quadro variants of MSI’s laptop range. In some cases they will have more RAM as standard, or certain LCD configs. There’s so many fucking laptop models, its giving me HP hellscape, so I’m not gonna comb the desert for it.

Workstations

WT = GT Titan = CreatorProX
WS = GS Stealth = CreatorZ
WF = GS Stealth? idk
W? = GE Raider = CreatorProZ
WE = Maybe GL Series?
WP = Maybe GP Leopoard?

There seems to be more and more coming around, but I don’t really see them on the market. Eh.

Mid to Low End Tier

  • GP Leopard (discontinued)
    • Aimed for budget/performance if GE Raider is too much
    • Required CPU/GPU for gaming but not recommended
    • Some say these are trash but there are cheaper machines…

  • Delta Series
    • Top of the line AMD version w/ AMD GPUs
    • Discontinued?
  • GL Series (very old)
    • Doesn’t have a name
    • May be low end idk
    • Succeeded by GP leopard
      • Pulse
      • Crosshair
        • Metal chassis versions of GL
        • Snapping hinges
        • Low end gaming
  • Katana
  • Sword
    • Thin heatsinks
    • Plastic
    • More snapping hinges
    • Even lower end gaming
  • Alpha
    • AMD Budget gaming laptop w/ AMD GPUs
    • Not sure where this should go, maybe equal to GL?
      • Bravo
        • Entry level AMD laptop
        • Lower graphics
  • GF Thin
    • Entry level Stealth?
    • Super cheap used! A lot sold!
      • GF Cyborg
        • See through plastic version

GT66 Titan – None Sold 🙁
GE66 Raider 10th thru 12th gen systems, EX+ is new systems
GS66 Stealth Had to modify search (-12th gen)

From here it became apparent that MSI has multiple CPU generations in a system. I didn’t know that on the previous searches, I only assumed current systems could have been configured this way. As far as sold listings, these are by far the most popular. Additionally the original release date via The Verge was set to be in April 2020. This was for the GE66 Raider, GS66 Stealth and the Creator 17. A reason why there is probably so many is because this was when we got the pandemic, so for those in the USA, quite a bit of us got money aid & relief. Likewise businesses got their PPP loans and those could be forgiven, meaning even more free money if you had a biz! Uhm so thats why I think there’s a shit load of them, they got a CPU update in 2021, and wouldn’t doubt they got one in 2023.
