Precision 15″ and 17″ models basically
The new Pro Max 16″ & 18″
and 16″ 5600 series are in this guide.
Basically main workstation lines, with fastest CPUs and GPUs.
The lesser 3000, 5000, 14″ workstations and other series will be on a different page. 🙂
At the time of this writing, I just got done with my price guide for Dell Precisions, Version 4.
That link will be the current version, whatever dankpads.com/precisions will be.
And unlike Version 3, I will be separating these a bit. So I can BS and add more content, or just have a fucking slog of a page… maybe that will be nice too?

How to Interpret this Guide
First Column – Model – Clickable link to ebay
2nd column – Sold – How many laptops sold in the past 3 months on eBay, the more the better
When I do this price research, it is for sold listings on eBay
All prices are in USD, intended for the connected 48 states. I have worldwide selected for shipping, so whoever ships to USA, and it was sold out of the country, itll show. I wont see 400 laptops if they aren’t shipping to USA.
I sort from lowest price, to highest price. So say if there was a 100 laptops sold….
3rd column – Low Price – These prices will be the 25th to 35th laptop on the sold listings page. Sometimes they may be a stellar deal, but most will just need an SSD, OS install, or has visual damage. Assume it’ll need a power cord.
4th column – Mid Price – like above, it would be 55 to 60th laptop sold. These can require work for older machines, but newer ones will often come with an OS installed, and could come with a charger. Essentially these would be ready to go, unless it has something nice people want (fast CPU, GPU, nicer screen).
5th column – High Price – this is about the 75th to 80th laptop there. This is like my cut off price for a laptop if I were to recommend. Because you could probably get something newer, or faster. These should come with a charger, operating system, a working battery, and generally should be working! If not you’re overpaying for a Buy It Now listing or auction! Sometimes I will see European listings start about here.
6th Column – EX+ – Prices here are usually Brand New In Box, or New, Open Box type of laptops, You are buying from a reputable seller who has their own warranty for the laptop or are an authorized refurbisher from the OEM, or some sort of arrangement with them. If they are used, often times they are configured with the max memory, or storage options available. They would also have the most powerful processor or graphics card, and will probably have the optional kick ass screen too.
In some cases the first row & column will be info, like if there’s a soldered CPU, screen size/ratio, certain type of charger or graphics card connector.
From what i’ve encountered, you can get high end models, at a low price, and you can get absolute JUNKED machines at high end prices… just choose wisely.
Also Im gonna put some extra boxes in here. Graphics and CPU stuff, Ill do one for ram and storage but probably under the notes. For the max hard drives, I am not counting the CD/DVD HDD bay. So if it comes with one, I’d assume you can add it, if available.

Swap these GPUs from an Alienware machine or another. These have much more flexibility upgrading the GPU than the HP 8760W & 8770W, and there was no 17″ ThinkPad during this era. Additionally these were the last machines available with a CD or DVD drive.

Note: the 7710 is the last 17″ Precision available with discrete graphics as standard!
Integrated graphics became standard from the 7720 base model & onwards!
Sorry but the table would be jacked up if I put “Intel graphics” on each fucking option.
If you’re gonna upgrade you’re gonna need a few DGFF connectors (cant find anything cheaper), and the correct heatsink assembly for it.
I have a 7730 and it has since been retired, it kicked ass compared to my W550s, rendered videos a lot faster. I got a nice discount on it because it was damaged, and the DGFF connectors were misaligned. It was an easy pin grid repair and needed some reseating. It had a 2.9 Xeon E-2186M & P4200 graphics, but for some odd reason its battery would drain when off, so it would take awhile to turn on due to bios resetting. At the time the P Series ThinkPads were still a premium in the used market, & ive seen plenty of dells just get sold cheap.
But like 2 years later I upgraded to an MSI GE78 Raider w/ a much powerful i7-13700 & RTX 3070.

Yeah all of these can have Integrated graphics, check specs before buying. As long as you have the Dell service tag/serial number, you can check Dell online if it comes with a GPU. These are basically the XPS 9700 series with quadro graphics. They are slimmer than the 77xx models, and only have two ram slots. It is hella slim, and if you notice, has a centered keyboard due to no numberpad. They don’t have an intellipoint either, so theirs that. I think they offer better screens than the 77xx as the 16:10 were premium vs 16:9.

I cant confirm, but I think Dell had IPS displays for these 15″ 4:3 machines. I do not know if they still had them for the widescreen transition, but they did have some later on, I think the M4700, maybe M4600. I cant confirm because “Dell Ultrasharp” was both IPS and TN in marketing material.

Once DGFF started, you couldn’t upgrade graphics from other laptops, the Alienware cards are different shape than Precisions. I think each DGFF can upgrade from the next gen if they are the same generation or type, there is no official name for them, just shapes. I’ve heard some people upgrade from the 17″ 77xx series, but please reseach before dropping the card. What I find weird is the power delivery being only 180W… well you may need 240W for the 17″ graphics cards if you upgrade, I am presuming.
Pro Max 16 Plus has the DGFF 4 Townhouse looking GPU, so it may be swappable with the PM 16 base laptops.

Ok this format sucks now
If you want regular SoDIMM ram sticks, you can get a CAMM interposer card
Hence the 2 different ram maxes, SoDIMM has less, CAMM can be more
Ram speeds are all over the place, read the spec sheet for better info
I THINK, not sure if the PM 16+ has a thin/performance chassis,

Why are there TWO 76xx searches? Originally I had only one search for each model. However from what I gathered, the more powerful GPU systems required beefier cooling, so a thicker chassis. Almost all ebay listings dont call them thin or performance variants.

These are a SHIT ton of laptops… But they are like the new 16″ models. Yeah I didn’t follow the 15.6″ XPS clones, as the 56xx are essentially that. but one thingto consider is that there wasn’t a 5770 succesor, and same with the 5570 as well. So I assume Dell just formed both of those things to be the 5680, and then when they had the 7680, they knew they had too many machines. Dell completely skipped the Intel 14th generation CPU systems, as the 5690 is the new “Series 1” Ultra processors.
