Price guide info
Model
– Highlighted text is a link to the ebay search, sold listings. The first search is either a generic catch all search, or just the MTM. Then from there it is specific models
Sometimes I sift through the information, as itll have parts listings and in some cases
Sold – How many units sold
Low, Mid, High – Should be obvious. 25-30%, 50-60%, 75-85% of the sold listings.
EX+ – Higher than high, but usually bc of it being in great condition, it has something special (accessories, complete with original box, new old stock, certain type of OS installed). In some cases, it can just a working unit…

Pricing data from TPG 9 & 10 (2024, 2025) will be in BOLD, especially so if there’s no data or just a significant price change.

  • After the price table, I have some notes dotted in this format
  • Literally just my thoughts in here
    • Also idk if i’ll be in search results without it… so yeah 🙂
  • Because of how old these are, I will note if they are untested, damaged, bootable, & if they have an operating system
    • consider you will not get something turn key, the latter at a low price, but if you do, I will note it!
  • I will link sellers on here and their location, usually if they are e-Waste or e recyclers, or specialized sellers who rebuild. Its here if you want to save them as a seller
    • In this era, there is a lot of demand but not so much of supply. That said, JCS computers, errr Jeremiah’s Computer Store LLC is an awesome seller of old and late model ThinkPads! Their listings are accurate, they take good pictures, and I believe they are a good seller.
    • Zdad Traders – ANother good seller
    • EAST-RECYCLING – No Nonsense seller, good pics

      • Otherwise I see some parts for PC/XT systems that are avail, but none for PS/55 (well idk if its compatible but you know).
        • Got on an airplane & to working on this guide 😀
  • PS/Note
    • Both were untested, linked seller had 2, low was best offer, mid was auction. High is an avail unit, messed up display, but comes with IBM era bag.
    • Basically the PS/Note line had the length/width dimensions of a A4 sheet of paper or smaller.
      • PS/2 Note Were bigger, and had room for more chips & power.
      • Thus PS/Note were cheaper due to its size… couldln’t fit in as much.
  • 300
    • Linked seller had mid price, they got bunch of old stuff, not really much PCs
    • The 300 is infamously known to be built by Zenith Data Systems & its quality control is BAD
  • 300C
    • I didn’t know about this thing until 2024. I guess there was a special order color screen version of the 300. I am guessing it was not available in USA, as there’s no info on it via PSREF or ThinkWiki.

Economy Version of the 700 Series
1994 to 1995

From here IBM took a closer watch of their economy series, and based them closer to the flagship 700 design language. Although they both have similar bento box designs, the 7xx models had kept the proprietary 4 pin trapezoid power adapter, while the 3xx models had a coax type end. These plugs are slightly larger than the later 7xx, 600, and T/X/A/R types that we would get later. Additionally, you will find more bells and whistles on the 7xx vs the 3xx models, the 3xx have less CPU power, HDD disk size and lesser displays.

They are charging nearly $100 for ground advantage (total would be $150 shipped), the cheapest shipping option from USPS. I just calculated shipping., 15 x 13 x 5 inches for 8 pounds is $12, even if i oversized it, 10 pounds, 18 x 15 x 7 its $20 at the retail window. They have a generic fucking description, dont even bother to look at the laptop, which has a broken fucking display. I was weary seeing their 97% feedback, now i see why. 360 ThinkPad
May 1994 to December 1995

Just like the 760 & 765 but the 360 & 365 units do not have the rising keyboard slide like the 760 & 765 units do. Also I think the 36x series have an extra chip in the motherboard to accept “non smart” batteries, that only worked on 36x machines. Yes you can put a 76x smart battery in here, but not 36x onto a 76x. Whats funny is the 360 came out first, then the 350 a month later, yet the 360 had more models and outlived the 350. IBM is so strange at times.

Japan’s 300 Series
March 1991 to June 1995

I am changing it up a bit before we go back to the mainstream models.
The “5523-S” is the PS/55 model that IBM USA wanted to import to USA, because it was better than the PS/2 L40 SX via size & form factor. We never got a direct model to the states, the 700, 300 & 500 were all built different, there was no case/mobo that was exactly like the 5523-S.

Looking at the timeline, I do notice there is a model gap from the 5523-S to the 320 from October 1992 to September 1993. Likely the 5523-S (Note N33sx or N23sx) was sold longer than I thought, or there is another model I do not know about. It does coincide when the 300 was made.

34x Japan Economy

The MTM on these machines is 2610, note that the 235 is 2607, z50 WorkPad is 2608, & 240 is 2609, which I think all came out after these. Yeah its odd, but remember, this is IBM which did release the 370 as a direct 755 clone, when they had the 355 being made; and they also had the 310 made right after the 365, then to release the 380 machine & keep producing them at the same time…

365 Series – The cheaper 765 & last of the similarity

I used to own a 365XD and it was a tidy little machine. It did have a “hood” that you can open up like the 765, but its keyboard was not as nice as the broken 755 I had. Note the longer Trackpoint buttons compared to the little ones on the 360.

310 “LaCrosse”… Whut?

These models don’t really sell, none sold on TPG 10 and it looks like TPG 9 had one sold unit. So they aren’t really sought after. Its a strange model TBH, 3 spindle 380 came out soon and the 365 looked just like the 755 with parts compatibility… so this was sold as a cheaper 770? but even then the 600 came out and well, we know that sucess brought the future T/X systems.

When IBM released the 370C back in May 1995, it was suspposed to be a special edition model. Based on the 755 model line, it shares the same MTM and parts, but was an upgrade from the 360CE. Legit it was a special order and inventory was low, really dunno why they did it. However when it came to the numbering system, IBM jumped a few numbers, so the successor to the 365 could not be a 370… as it was an older model. Yet they didnt jump to 375, nor did they jump to 380, despite there being a 380 model coming out later. Anyways, to me it is just a meh machine out of all the 300 series. There’s even a youtube video about the frustration of this thing. Maybe I’ll get one and find out its actually a decent thing, but for now, there’s others to get… if i can afford it. 😡

Also the 315 is not necessarily an upgrade from the 310 unit. It is actually just a retail unit of the 310. That sounds odd, but I believe it was basically a 310 that was geared towards consumers (assuming it was sold in big box stores like Best Buy & Curcuit City) instead of corporate buyers. The software for the 315 is different than the 310, so maybe it was cheaper due to licensing and lesser software. I am just throwing stones at that, but this and the 380 had a 385 retail unit to offer.

3 Spindle, All In One Laptop – 380

You will find these a dime a dozen! These are a SLUG, I have 3 of them, 380, 380D & 380Z. Yes a Z! Fuck yea. I don’t think much of them, they are NOT the first All In One (3 Spinning Drives) laptop, but for ThinkPads yes. They are really robust, I don’t think there’s much problems on them. Other than something faster, they are a decent in-between for old old laptops and osmething newer.

390 Multimedia Laptop

This thing is big. Wheras the 600 is “Thin N Lite”, 390 is pretty much where big laptops evolved size wise. It’s more of a “cooler” laptop design compared to the blocky 380. But what plagues these machines is the snapping hinges. I see so many broken hinges and broken bezels or bases. It is the Pre-A Series ThinkPad, but build wise it is not so robust, these things get abused!

Small Laptops & Minis

OK I’m going to be cheating. There were a few “non laptops” I’m gonna put in here, and its not fair to have the PalmTop when there was the WorkPad as well. These are in chronological order, I’m sure I am missing a few IBM Devices to go along with it, specifically their computer cell phone thing that I forgot what it was. The Simon! Thats in here now 🙂

Pre-ThinkPad & Japan 220/30

I don’t know much info about these things. the 5499 seems to be some sort of terminal for mainframes. The PCradio was a heavy duty laptop that didn’t have a HDD. The 220 & 230 were super small laptops made for Japan that had a trackball!

“Not a Real ThinkPad”
PalmTop, Chandra, & WorkPad

The PalmTop PC110 needs no introduction! The 235 if probably the most widespread East Asia mini 200 you can find. The WorkPad z50 is an interesting lightweight ThinkPad that uses an NEC MIPS CPU running Winedows CE. These are “not ThinkPads”, though arguably the PC110 might have been a late released 200, the 235 was an IBM branded machine from a partnership, and well the z50 was a small notebook that was a part of the WorkPad PDA side of IBM.

240 – A Mini Near Perfection

I believe this is the only 200 Series ThinkPad that was available for sale in the USA. Extremely small but not comprimised like other iterations. The price of smaller LCDs had gone down & the miniturzation of the CCFL inverter made bigger screens available in small form factors. Hence the success of this machine cememented that there was demand for a small ThinkPad, and so the X Series would be the successor of the 240…

Ultraportables

MOST of these were sold in the United States, but some were Japan / East Asia markets.

500 Series

The 500 series was one of the smallest machines you can get from IBM at the time. Similar to the PS/Note series but not limiting itself to CPU power, the 500 was for those who wanted ultra portability without comprimise. IBM saw the success of Canon’s NoteJet and figured they could brand a ThinkPad model onto it. The 550 Bubble Jet is not necessarily a 500 UltraPortable, but needed to be somewhere in the TP Family. I assume it was named the 550 to keep brand model naming integrity alongside the 750 and 350 being released at the same time.

1994 Simon & WorkPad PDA

The IBM Simon was the first “smartphone” made in 1994. It was essentially a PDA built within a CellPhone with the help of BellSouth. It has a old touch screen, similar to the 700T, in some images there’s a green/yellowing of the display, in this one, its mostly white. i wonder if there was a 2nd LCD supplier. The WorkPad was produced by Palm Inc / US Robotics / 3 Comm or whatever, I’m not digging any deeper.
