- Do you want something a bit more durable? T420
- Or just get a T14s for the same price.
- You can still get IPS Upgrade kits for T420 and T430, they are about $40+.
- T430 can get Ivyrain to flash a custom bios via a bootloader
- T440p socketed
- Do not confuse it with the T440, it is a different motherboard and soldered!
- Drop in FHD upgrade is awesome
- Quadcore it too! Much easier than previous machines.
- Some say its the ultimate ThinkPad…
- maybe in 14″ but L440 has socketed CPU too.
- Then the T25 came out

- 16:10 IPS ThinkPads are back soo… its kinda meh
- 3 Drives
- Ultrabay, 2.5″ HDD bay & mSATA from T420 & onward
- I think T410 had mPCIE slot, so you’ll need an adapter
- T440p had the same thing, tho some people said you could do a 4th drive with soldering experience.
- These are the last time it was this fucking easy, Lenovo would slowly take away the ability to even have 2 drives, even tho there is space!

- Holy shit lol
The iGPUs in the 5th thru 7th gen are pretty fuckin good, so its not a big deal if you don’t get dGPU. Performance is great if you do an eGPU setup, but given the prices of graphics cards right now….
In the past T480’s (and some other 8th gen systems) had an issue with the BIOS Firmware updating and laptop not working. There are ways to reset but it would also not let you use 3rd party batteries… neat.
I included the AMD A475 & A485 machines, they are basically base T Series, and yes Lenovo would bring AMD into the T Series line up.
The T460p & T470p are not in this list, they will be at the workstation page. Yeah its not really a workstation but whatever, we have iGPU P14 Series that are essentially a T14s, fuck I think there are P14s machines too.
The T480 is regarded as “the last great ThinkPad”. Bollocks, it is not even fucking close to any of the T6x or T4xx machines, yet the goalposts keeps on changing. Ive yet to use one, but I got a T14s Gen 1, so whatever, nub like to think on its own… probably bc I didn’t install the keyboard screws correctly.
Display FAQs – IPS Brought back!
- FHD IPS optional on T460
- FHD IPS default from T470
- WQHD IPS option on T480
- IDK if you can upgrade to FHD IPS on a T440; it wasn’t available for it
- Dun’t confuse it with the T440p r T440s those had it available & able to.
- IDK if you can upgrade to FHD IPS on a T440; it wasn’t available for it
- T450 can be upgraded to FHD IPS
- My advice is just stick with a T470 and onwards if you for sure want IPS from factory
- But just know that you could get a fucking laptop with a replaced shitty panel… hopefully not!
The storage situation…
- Primary hard drive
- 9.5mm SATA III drives
- T440 thru T470
- 7mm SATA III drives
- T480
- 9.5mm SATA III drives
- NVMe as primary?
- SATAe laptops
- T460 & T470
- Basically these machines had two PCIe Lanes implemented on the SATA connector, I thought it looked like a SAS connector when first seeing it (tabs are one piece)
- You can’t get PCIe 4×4, but 4×2 is pretty nice, and much faster than SATA III
- T460 & T470
- T460
- Cant find the actual FRU, but a part number is AM12Y000500
- NVMe SATAe caddy – Aliexpress Link
- If you buy one, make sure it has the heatsink with it! It’ll fit without banging around and prob needs to be cooled anyways
- NVMe SATAe caddy – Aliexpress Link
- Cant find the actual FRU, but a part number is AM12Y000500
- T470 & T25
- T470 NVMe Caddy
- I guess its compatible for the T480 too…
- It is similar to an eDP cable
- T470 NVMe Caddy
- T480
- Not confirming, but I think the T480 uses the same caddy for NVMe drives
- But it is PCIe 4×4 and not 4×2!
- Not confirming, but I think the T480 uses the same caddy for NVMe drives
- SATAe laptops
- 2nd Drive WLAN Slot
- 2242 SATA III
- T440 & T450
- 2242 NVMe 3×2
- T460
- Primary drive must be SATA, it cannot support two NVMe drives
- Im getting mixed info about WWAN accepting sata, most say only NVMe
- I did see an NVMe to mSATA adapter… um idk about that
- T470
- I think it support 2242 SATA… misinfo?
- T480
- 2242 NVMe 3×2
- McGarrah has a nice post about it
- was gonna comment but I don’t have a github account…
- 2242 NVMe 3×2
- T460
- 2242 SATA III
- Note, these are the last iterations of having a 2nd hard drive for the 14″ machines
- T15 are affected in the same way, ONE FUCKING DRIVE!
- You can only get two or more if you go workstations. its stupid
- T15 are affected in the same way, ONE FUCKING DRIVE!

I dont know if this is a T14s G1 or a T490, i forget if I have the latter… CLOSE ENOUGH! π

What to look out for? Idk much about these, my T14s G1 is a fuckin lul tho… I forgot about the secure access, so I would like to nab one cheap, just for that silly fingerprint and RFID thingy, which the latter used to be standard on 600, T2x & 770 ThinkPads. Lenovo dropped the A series and just added a 5 to signify their AMD system. I think they had done that at the very beginning with their E/Edge systems. Soldered RAM was implemented on the T490 series, but with one slot available. On the Intel units, you could get a dedicated graphics card, but on AMD units, you could only get an iGPU. The good thing is that these are all NVMe 4×4, so even tho its one drive, you have speeds finally from the X1 Carbon Gen 4 and… well idk which T4xxs went 4v4. Whatevs.

I will not get into displays n shit… WUXGA IPS default, then some slightly better panel with higher contrast ratio and then you have WQUXGA as well.
Gen 5 systems brought a 2.8K OLED as an option, I think G6 had touch screen on the OLED and then on G7 they uppped it with 120Hz screens, 500 Nits instead of 400 Nits and VRR. Unless the seller proclaims it, just think you hit the lotto if you win an auction or BIN and its OLED. I would go for it!!!
I personally have not used any of these systems. And really I shouldn’t, I have my powerhouse 17″ MSI gamer laptop. I have a T14 Gen 1, I have some other 15.6″ MSI laptop that has a fucking shitty wifi card that dies, and then I drunkenly bought a Zbook G8 FireFly 15… cucked myself on this purchase. Even when it comes to the 15″ machines, I would rather have a P Variant, but when I go from there, I won’t be able to have that badass refresh rate…
AHEM… with that said. IF I WOULD, say drunkenly buy one for a good price ($100 to $200) impossibly I would like to get the G6 Lunar Lake model so I can see how well that Memory on Chip is. If not, maybe the 4GB dGPU G4 Intel. But thats just me, not you, you go buy what you want and use this guide for prices… not really advice lol (these words are here for SEO

Sorry, i don’t have anything to write about these models. You either go for the 14″ standard, want a small sleek 12 or (i guess) 13.3″ machine… if you’re going 15″, might as well try to get Workstation. YES I’ve had 15″ shitboxes in the past (literally typing on a Zbook G8 FireFly which has a fucking iGPU) But these T series I got nuffin to want about them. The W550s literally is everything I need from a 15″ ThinkPad of this era, I have replaced it with a lil gaming laptop and this FireFly… except well it doesn’t have a 3K display…. Shit I forgot I wanted a P50 for a bit, so I have a shitty P51 with base model and my dad has a P50 with locked bios that I had. Way fucking awesome build quality, ok so I dont recommend the T Series if you go up against that, esp when its NVMe 4×4 w/ multiple drives and ur fucked iwth one or two drives and 2242 bs.
For screens I know that the T540p thru T560p offered the 15.5″ 3K panel, which is nice on the W550s. I think T570 and later had 4K optional but don’t quote me on that. Ill have to do panel research another day (maybe when I do on the P series… wait no :P)
Oh yeah, there was no A Series 15″ models, those were only in the 12″ and 14″ form factors, honestly I really don’t know why. Maybe their L and E Series was just too good. I mean they didnt offer AMD on the G1 or G2 systems. Heck when they went to 16″, they just skipped AMD on gen 3, oh well.

Although these are bigger laptops than the 14″, they still have one fucking hard drive… ugh. And all of them are Integrated graphics, except the Intels G1 & G2 which had dGPU optional, so good luck with that! Not getting into the RAM crap, its similar to the 14″ models, even some have a soldered slot. what the fuck?!
I didnt separate those with Lunar Lake Intel or Gorgon Point AMD, they are all the same search… maybe if there’s a lot then I would. Me doing it for skylake/kaby lake was just OCD, but honestly the performance gains were there… on these? well yeah, but I mean, i gotta be shilled enough for it (I stopped reading ThinkPad Generals on 4chan, Discord or TP forums).

There was no L550, I have no idea why. Well lenovo botched their xx40 series launch, maybe that had something to do with it. Too many people buying the xx30 systems and not much on the xx40. These still had TN HD panels as their base and you could get FHD IPS as an option, but no fancy 3K or UHD displays.

In 2022 when Lenovo launched the 16″ Z Series (and went 16:10 on most of their line up), they didn’t launch the L series to be that size or form factor either. Maybe it was because the 15.6″ 16:9 panels were cheap, but there was also the launch of the Z Series Z16 model. That was an oddball indeed, ultrabook, cheap, but no trackpoint. So for two model years the L series stayed 15.6″, but on the third year, the L Series went to 16″. Hence the T16 G3 lines up with the L16 G1, but if we are on the 14″ models, then the L16 G4 and T14 G4 are similar platforms & specs. Anywho when the L16 came out… there was no Z16 G3, I think the no trackpoint was a slump, and maybe “gen Z” didn’t care for it. With that said, there’s still an ultrabook 16″ market, but I think the P16s AMD series needed to secure that.
